According to Article 52 of Regulations for Road Traffic Safety, the validity of driving license:
1. From July 1st, 2013, general driving licenses that are newly issued or have been granted are exempted from periodic renewal. The driving license will continue being valid after expiration and no license renewal will be required. The same rule applies to alien residence permit grained to foreigners.
2. Drivers who are punished permanently prohibited from driving license test apply for re-test will be granted driving license with one-year validity if they pass the reviewing.
3. Foreigners, people from Mainland China area, residents in Hong Kong or Macau, or nationals without household registration in the Taiwan area who obtain the driving license in our country shall renew the license every 6 years.
4. Drivers at a specific age or above who apply to another rule for the validity of driving license and license renewal should follow the additional rule accordingly.
5. Vehicle drivers shall apply for license renewal to the highway supervision authority within one month before or after expiration. Except the provision of exemption from license renewal specified above, drivers who fail to renew the license after expiration shall not be allowed to drive.
According to Article 22 of Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, a fine of NT$1800~3600 will be imposed if driving with overdue driving. Drivers will then be forbidden from driving and the license will be withheld.
