To prevent the occurrence of traffic accidents, we would like to remind the public to avoid drunk driving and drowsy driving for your own safety and the safety of other road users. It is only when all drivers observe the four major principles, including the “TCHD” policy of “Don’t drive after drinking, take a taxi,” “Don’t drive after drinking, call friends or family to give you a ride,” “Don’t drive after drinking, take a break at a hotel” and “After drinking, getting a designated driver is the safest way,” for your safe return home! The penalties for drunk driving have been increased since July 1, 2019: motorcyclists shall be fined between NTD15,000 and NTD90,000, and motorists shall be fined between NTD30,000 and NTD120,000. In addition, the vehicle shall be impounded and the driver’s license shall be suspended for 1 to 2 years on the spot. If children under the age of twelve are passengers or have been injured in a car accident, the driver’s license shall be suspended for 2 to 4 years. Those who cause serious injury or death shall have their driver’s license revoked permanently, and the driver shall never be eligible to retake the driver’s license test again. For repeat offenders, motorcyclists shall be fined NTD90,000 while motorists shall be fined NTD120,000 without cumulative limits. In addition to impounding the vehicle, the driver’s license shall be revoked for 3 years and may not be retaken during that period. If the driver has caused severe injury or death, the driver’s license shall be suspended for 3 years, and the driver shall never be eligible to retake the driver’s license test again. Drivers who refuse to be pulled over for a sobriety test by the police shall be imposed a fine of NTD 180,000 and additional penalties shall be accumulated. Please pay close attention to these rules and never drink and drive.
