"Safety First: Slow Down, Look, Stop – No License, No Road" Protecting Our Safety

  • Organization:Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office-Motor Vehicle Information Section
Content

As per statistics from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, nearly 60% of traffic accidents occur at intersections each year. Moreover, the country has witnessed several recent incidents resulting in severe injuries and fatalities involving pedestrians. Hence, the Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office remains committed to emphasizing the importance of traffic safety concepts such as intersection yielding and prevention of driving without a license through ongoing education and advocacy efforts aimed at the public.

Mr. Jiang Shu-ren, Director of the Taipei City District Motor Vehicle Office, reminds road users to adhere to the steps of "slow down, look, and stop" when approaching intersections. They should also yield to pedestrians crossing and demonstrate patience and empathy, especially towards the elderly and vulnerable. Pedestrians are advised to follow the rule of "stop, look, and listen" when crossing intersections equipped with pedestrian crossing facilities. When large vehicles are nearby, they must remain vigilant of blind spots and the differences in radius between inner wheels to avoid accidents.

In addition to promoting "intersection yielding," the Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office strongly urges people not to drive without a license, as it puts themselves and other road users at risk. They also maintain collaboration with industry, government, academia, and research institutions to further promote motorcycle training and subsidies. Individuals who complete the training and obtain a license will receive a subsidy of NT$1,300. As per statistics from National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University, obtaining a motorcycle license through training reduces the risk of violations by 56% and the risk of accidents by 35%. This initiative aims to encourage young people to undergo formal motorcycle driving training, thereby enhancing road safety.

As guardians of traffic safety, the Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office remains committed to advocating intersection safety and promoting correct road usage behavior. Furthermore, they are actively participating in Taipei City's "Traffic Safety Year" initiative for 2024. This involves close collaboration with various departments of the Taipei City Government and private sector organizations to uphold traffic order and ensure the safety of all road users' lives and properties.
